Estimate body fat from Navy circumferences

The percent comes from Hodgdon and Beckett (1984) circumference equations for the US Navy: logarithms and measurements converted to inches. It is a field estimate, not absorptiometry.

Calculate

The two 1984 Navy equations are not the same. Hips are required for women.

Height in cm, converted to inches in the original formula. Convert feet and inches first if you prefer to measure that way, then back to cm — or measure cm directly.

Tape, horizontal, not cinched. A large meal or a tape placed too high skews the result. Convert inches × 2.54 if you measured in inches.

Required for women (1984 formula). Unused for men in this method.

How the calculator works

You enter formula sex, height, waist, neck, and hips if the female equation applies. The tool converts centimeters to inches (divide by 2.54) because the original papers are in inches, then applies log10. Men: waist and neck. Women: waist, hips, and neck. A waist smaller than the neck (men) or an inconsistent combination (women) is rejected. The result can print low or high depending on tape placement: that is not a reason to invent a “DXA correction.”

These Naval Health Research Center reports predict a percent from circumferences and height, for 1980s military populations. The method is widely reused as “U.S. Navy body fat.” It does not equal DXA, hydrostatic weighing, or a BOD POD. We do not publish an invented standard error. “Essential / athlete / fitness” bins seen on other sites are not in our cited sources: we therefore do not label the percent beyond the raw number.

Worked example

Man, 178 cm, waist 102 cm, neck 40 cm

Male, 178 cm, waist 102 cm, neck 40 cm (no hips).

  1. Convert to inches: 178 / 2.54; 102 / 2.54; 40 / 2.54.
  2. Apply the male log10 formula.
  3. Result on the order of 20% on this example (display to one decimal).

About 20.1% by the Navy method. That is not a DXA fraction.

Woman, 165 cm, waist 90 cm, neck 33 cm, hips 110 cm

Female, four measurements.

  1. Hips enter log10(waist + hips − neck) in inches.
  2. Female 1984 formula → about 17% on this example.

About 17.0%. A tape too loose at the hips is enough to move this number.

Input notes

Sex
Switches between the two 1984 reports. It is not a sociological gender field.
Height
Height enters as log10 in both formulas: measure it as carefully as for BMI.
Waist
Tape placement (navel vs smallest waist) is the main day-to-day gap.
Neck
A crooked or too-high tape moves the logarithm as much as a real composition change.
Hips
Largest hip circumference, horizontal. Required if sex = female. Ignored by the male formula.

Assumptions and limits

  • Measurements taken in comparable conditions (same time of day, same tape tension).
  • Anatomy compatible with “Navy” circumferences (no malformation, not pregnancy).
  • Inch = 2.54 cm exactly.

Limits

  • Not DXA, not a scan, not scale impedance.
  • Calibrated on 1984 military cohorts, not your clinic today.
  • Sensitive to tape technique and gut contents.
  • No “athlete” classes displayed: we do not have that source here.

How to read the result

Use the percent to follow a trend if you always measure in the same place, not to post a “stage body fat.” BMI is another number (kg/m²): the two can tell different stories, and neither is a diagnosis. A violent week-to-week swing often flags the tape, not 4 points of fat gone.

Common mistakes

  • Measuring waist after a meal or while sucking in.

    The formula believes the circumference you typed. Suck in, the percent drops on screen, not in adipose tissue.

  • Skipping hips for a woman.

    The 84-29 formula needs them. Without hips, the calculation is refused rather than borrowing the male formula.

  • Comparing this % to a cheap scale’s impedance as if they were interchangeable.

    Two estimators, two biases. Neither is DXA.

Why inches if I type centimeters?

Because the 1984 formulas are in inches. The tool converts; you do not have to.

1 inch = 25.4 mm exactly. Copying the coefficients in cm without converting the logs would yield another percent, wrong relative to the cited reports.

Is this as accurate as DXA?

No, and we do not give an invented “± X%” to pretend otherwise.

DXA is another technique, clinical or research. Navy is a tape prediction. Useful for a rustic trend, insufficient to settle a medical body-composition question.

Why hips only for women?

Because that is how report 84-29 is written, distinct from male 84-11.

That is not a comment on bodies. It is the mathematical structure of the two technical notes. Applying the male formula to a woman, or the reverse, is not what the cited sources do.

What time of day should I measure?

Reproducibly: same time, same tape tension, preferably away from a very large meal.

We do not have a clock protocol imposed by the reports beyond measurement logic. The useful rule is consistency, not a magic hour.
