How the calculator works
Each category contributes in proportion to its weight. Scores are multiplied by their weights, added up, then divided by the sum of the weights. That division matters mid-semester: if only homework and the midterm have been scored, the average shown is for what exists, not for the whole course. The page states clearly when the weights do not yet total 100%.
Formula and method
grade = Σ(score × weight) ÷ Σ(weights)
Dividing by the sum of weights lets you compute mid-semester.
Σ(weights) = 100 → final course grade
Until the sum reaches 100, the figure is provisional.
Normalising by the weights entered is what separates this page from a generic weighted average: it gives an honest snapshot when part of the course is still ungraded. It does assume the missing categories will look like the ones already scored, which is not guaranteed. Drop-lowest-quiz and makeup-exam rules are not modelled.
Worked example
Full semester
Homework 90 at 20%, midterm 80 at 30%, final 70 at 50%.
- 90×20 + 80×30 + 70×50 = 1800 + 2400 + 3500 = 7700.
- Weights: 100.
- 7700 ÷ 100 = 77.
A course grade of 77, final, because the weights add to 100%.
Before the final
Homework 90 at 20%, midterm 80 at 30%. The 50% final has not been taken.
- 90×20 + 80×30 = 4200.
- Weights entered: 50.
- 4200 ÷ 50 = 84.
84 on the half of the course already scored, not a final grade.

- A missing category is simply left out of the calculation.
Limits
- No automatic drop of the lowest quiz.
- No makeup exam and no replacement score.
- No per-category minimum (some labs fail you below 60 regardless).
How to read the result
Until the weights add to 100, read the result as “where I stand on the scored part,” not as the course grade. An 84 on half the semester becomes a 77 if the final is a 70: that is exactly the second example. To find what that final has to be, switch to the dedicated calculator.
Common mistakes
Typing weights as fractions (0.3) instead of 30.
The field expects a percent. Normalisation rescales them anyway, but stay consistent.
Treating a mid-semester snapshot as the final grade.
Check that the weights add to 100% before you celebrate or panic.
Mixing 0–100 scores with letter-only categories.
Convert everything to the same scale before weighting.

Frequently asked questions
How do I average grades with category weights?
Σ(score × weight) ÷ Σ(weights).
Multiply each score by its weight, add the products, then divide by the sum of the weights. With 90 at 20%, 80 at 30% and 70 at 50%, you get 77.
What if I do not have every score yet?
Enter what you have.
The result is normalised on the weights entered, and the tool flags that they do not add to 100%. That is an honest mid-semester reading.
How is this different from a generic weighted average?
It tracks whether the weights add to 100%.
A generic weighted average treats any values and any weights. Here the weights are shares of a course, and the page tells you whether the course is fully scored.
