Estimate mulch volume for a rectangular bed

A bed is not formwork: mulch settles in a few weeks. The math gives spread volume, a small margin, then the equivalent in 50 L bags.

Length of the bed or strip to mulch, in meters.

Average width if the bed is not a true rectangle, in meters.

Target thickness after spreading. 5 cm = 0.05 m; 7 cm = 0.07 m. Maximum 50 cm. About 2 in ≈ 0.05 m.

Mulch settles. 5% default, more if the product is very fluffy.

How the calculator works

As with aggregate, volume is L × W × T in meters. Default waste is lower (5%): you do not compact mulch with a plate. The material still slumps on its own (rain, decay, foot traffic). The result is also in liters (1 m³ = 1,000 L) and 50 L bags, a common garden-center size. Typed thickness is capped at 50 cm: beyond that it is no longer surface mulch. US bulk mulch is often sold by the cubic yard: 1 m³ ≈ 1.31 yd³.

p = 5% default for handling losses and first settlement.

Conversion to liters and 50 L bags.

The rectangle approximates a bed. An irregular border uses an average width, or zones. Bark, chips, flax straw, or rubber crumb do not share density or settlement: the math does not convert to kilograms, because no single density is defensible. Maker sheets often give a volume (50 L, 2 cu ft) and a thickness range. A layer too thick against a woody stem is a cultural problem, not a formula problem.

Worked example

Hedge strip 10 m × 2 m, 5 cm of bark

L = 10 m, W = 2 m, T = 0.05 m, waste = 5%.

  1. Volume: 10 × 2 × 0.05 = 1.00 m³.
  2. With margin: 1.00 × 1.05 = 1.05 m³.
  3. Liters: 1,050 L.
  4. 50 L bags: 1,050 / 50 = 21 bags.

1.05 m³, or 1,050 L or 21 bags of 50 L (about 1.37 yd³).

Input notes

Length
Length of the bed along the hedge or fence. For a circle, compute area separately (πr²) then multiply by thickness: this tool stays rectangular.
Width
Mulched width, excluding plants if you leave a bare basin at the collar.
Thickness
Thickness you want today. 7 cm of fresh bark can fall toward 4–5 cm after a winter. Type spread thickness, not “in six months.”
Margin (settlement, losses)
5% covers bag losses and a slight surplus. A very fluffy product (straw) settles more: raise the margin or plan a top-up rather than an oversized first layer.

Assumptions and limits

  • Rectangular area of uniform thickness.
  • No mass conversion: only volume and 50 L bags are calculated.
  • The lump margin does not replace the product’s real settlement.

Limits

  • Mulch type (bark, cocoa, flax, slate) is not distinguished.
  • 70 L bags or bulk supersacks are recalculated from the displayed liters.
  • Basins at plant collars and unmulched paths are not deducted automatically.

How to read the result

21 bags of 50 L is 1.05 m³: check whether the garden center sells bulk cheaper at that volume. After placing, the level drops. A spring top-up is better than a 15 cm layer packed against collars. For decorative gravel in the same bed, switch to the gravel tool: density and settlement have nothing in common.

Common mistakes

  • Typing 5 for 5 cm of thickness.

    The unit is the meter. 5 cm = 0.05 m. Typing 5 would be a 5 m layer, rejected by the 0.5 m maximum.

  • Counting 50 L bags as if they were 2 cu ft bags without converting.

    The result divides liters by 50. For 2 cu ft bags (~56.6 L): liters / 56.6.

  • Thickening heavily “so I never come back.”

    Mulch settles and decays. An excessive layer against a collar smothers. Plan a top-up.

Why 5% waste and not 10% like gravel?

You do not compact mulch. The margin mainly covers bag losses and first slump.

Gravel is plated; mulch settles with time. Putting 10% up front pushes over-thickness at the collar. 5% is a default; a fluffy product or a windy spread can justify more. The cultural thickness (often 5 to 7 cm of bark) matters more than the waste lump.

How do I convert to a bulk bag?

Read the bulk-bag volume (often 1 m³ or 1.5 m³, or 2 yd³) and divide the increased volume by that volume.

The 1.05 m³ example is a 1 m³ bag plus a little, or a 1.5 m³ bag that is too large. Masses printed on bark bulk bags vary: do not convert with gravel’s 1,600 kg/m³.

Does the math work for slate or crushed marble?

For volume, yes. Not for 50 L bags or plant-like settlement.

A decorative mineral is a thickness bed (often 3 to 5 cm). Prefer the gravel tool if you want tonnes, or keep the m³ here and ignore 50 L bags. Slate barely settles; lower the margin.

Should I deduct plant footprints?

Only if they are large. A few shrubs in 20 m² do not change an extra bag.

Deduct paths, pavers, and wide bare basins. A dense perennial bed is mulched between plants: net area is close to L × W. Round up a bag: a half-opened bag stores poorly.
