Two resting-energy equations: Mifflin-St Jeor as the main result, revised Harris-Benedict (1984) as a comparison. No activity factor is applied.

How the calculator works
You enter weight, height, age, and formula sex. The tool computes Mifflin-St Jeor, featured because it is the resting equation then reused for TDEE and calories on HexaCalc. It also computes Harris-Benedict as re-evaluated by Roza and Shizgal in 1984, so the gap between two published models is visible rather than hidden. Neither is calorimetry. In the lab, strict BMR and resting energy expenditure (REE) are not the same; in public tools, “BMR” often means this resting prediction.

Mifflin-St Jeor was proposed as a new predictive equation in healthy adults. Harris-Benedict, older, was re-evaluated in 1984 on resting expenditure and body-cell mass. We do not claim one equation “wins” for every body: comparison studies exist, with results that depend on the group tested, and we do not invent their error percentages. Showing both avoids treating a single number as metabolic truth. To move to a full day, multiply Mifflin (not Harris) by a factor on the TDEE page — that is the tool’s internal consistency choice.

- Harris-Benedict 1984 = 88.362 + 13.397 × 80 + 4.799 × 180 − 5.677 × 30 ≈ 1,854 kcal/day.
- Gap ≈ 74 kcal, about 4% of the Mifflin figure on this example.
Primary BMR (Mifflin) = 1,780 kcal/day; Harris-Benedict comparison ≈ 1,854 kcal/day.

Assumptions and limits

- Adults; outside ICU or clinical calorimetry protocols.
- Typed weight and height are current measurements.
- The Mifflin result is what TDEE and calories reuse next.
Limits
- This is not BMR measured with an oxygen mask.
- Body composition is not in these equations.
- Illness, fever, hyper/hypothyroidism, sarcopenia: outside the model.
- The gap between the two formulas is not an “official scientific range”; it is simply two predictions.
How to read the result
If the two numbers are close, you will mostly see the activity rung’s effect once you go to TDEE. If they spread more, remember that predicted rest is already uncertain by a few percent, sometimes more, depending on the person. Neither 1,780 nor 1,854 kcal “explains” a weight stall. For the day, open TDEE from Mifflin.
Common mistakes
Multiplying Harris-Benedict by the TDEE page’s activity factor and comparing to our calories.
On HexaCalc, TDEE and calories start from Mifflin. Mixing bases creates a fake gap.
Picking the higher of the two “to eat more.”
This is not a buffet of formulas. The primary is Mifflin; Harris-Benedict is for comparison.
Concluding a metabolic disorder because the number “looks low.”
Without a measurement and a clinic, a predicted BMR diagnoses nothing. Medical advice is a different channel.

Frequently asked questions
Why show Mifflin and Harris-Benedict?
To show that two published equations, on the same inputs, do not always land on the same rest.
Choosing one formula and hiding the other would fake precision. Mifflin is our primary for internal consistency (TDEE, calories). Harris-Benedict 1984 remains a classic; Roza and Shizgal re-evaluated the coefficients. Neither is a diagnosis.
Does BMR include my workouts?
No. It is a resting estimate, without an activity factor.
As soon as you multiply by 1.2 to 1.9, you are no longer on this page: that is TDEE. BMR does not “contain” Tuesday’s run.
Are REE and BMR the same?
In the lab, no. Here “BMR” means the Mifflin / Harris-Benedict resting prediction.
BMR is measured under very controlled conditions; REE is a slightly less strict rest. Mifflin predicts a resting expenditure. We do not invent an REE→BMR conversion factor.
Does training raise this calculator’s BMR?
Not in the formula: only weight, height, age, and sex count.
If training changes your weight, the number will move. The tool does not add a “athlete bonus” to rest. A real effect on lean mass is not captured separately.
