Calculate a percent increase from A to B
Give a starting amount and a higher later amount. The tool reports the rise relative to the start, not a “neutral” gap between two figures.

How the calculator works
Subtract the start from the new value, divide by the absolute value of the start, multiply by 100. If the new value is lower, this page refuses the pair — use percent decrease. A start of zero cannot be a base.
Formula and method
hausse = (arrivée − départ) ÷ |départ| × 100
From 80 to 100: (20 ÷ 80) × 100 = 25%. The base is always the start, never the average of the two values.
The engine’s increase mode requires a nonnegative gap. You see the percent rise, the raw difference, and both endpoints. No annualizing: 25% from one month to the next is not a yearly rate. Successive percents do not cancel (see FAQs).
Worked example
From 80 to 100
start = 80, new = 100
- Gap: 100 − 80 = 20.
- Ratio to the base: 20 ÷ 80 = 0.25.
- As a percent: 0.25 × 100 = 25.
A 25% increase (raw gap of 20).

- Both numbers describe the same quantity, before then after.
- The comparison base is the start, not the new value and not the midpoint.
Limits
- A 100% increase doubles; a 200% increase triples. Everyday speech often confuses “twice as much” with “+200%.”
- No compounding and no CAGR: one period only.
How to read the result
Read the result as “relative to what it was.” 80 to 100 is +25% on 80, not +20% on 100. If you are comparing two quotes with no timeline, the symmetric gap on the percent-difference page is often the fairer reading.
Common mistakes
Dividing the gap by the new value (20/100) instead of the start (20/80).
A relative increase is always from the original base, here 80.
Expecting +25% then −25% to return to 80.
After +25% you are at 100. −25% of 100 is 25, leaving 75, not 80. Sequential percents do not undo each other.

Frequently asked questions
Does a 25% rise then a 25% fall return to the start?
No. The second move uses the new base.
On 80, +25% is 100. Then −25% of 100 is 75. Getting back to 80 from 100 would take −20%. The same logic is why “+10% then −10%” is not a round trip.
Why is a lower new value rejected?
This page only computes increases.
If the new value is smaller, the engine flags an invalid pair. Use percent decrease, which reports a positive drop (a 20% decrease, not a −20% increase).
Is the base always the starting value?
Yes — its absolute value.
Formula: (new − start) / |start|. A negative start (a balance, a temperature below zero) is still a base. A start of exactly 0 is rejected.
How should I read an increase above 100%?
+100% doubles; +200% triples.
From 50 to 150: gap 100, 100/50 = 200%, three times the original. “Twice as much” is +100%, not +200%. The raw gap on screen is a useful check.
