How the calculator works
You pick the unknown. The other two fields are read; the third is ignored. Time is a duration in hours (1.25 = 1 h 15), not a clock time. No breaks, hills or speed limits enter the model: it is average speed over the whole trip.
Formula and method
v = d / t
Average speed over duration t.
d = v × t
Distance at constant speed.
t = d / v
Duration if v is not zero.
This is the definition of average speed, not a GPS. Door-to-door 120 km in 1 h 30 includes lights; the speed is lower than cruising speed. Miles per hour are fine if both distance and speed are imperial; the engine does not convert km ↔ mi. For running pace (min/km), the dedicated tool is clearer.
Worked example
120 km in 1.5 h
speed mode, d = 120, t = 1.5.
- v = 120 ÷ 1.5 = 80.
80 km/h average.
Time for 90 km at 60 km/h
time mode, d = 90, v = 60.
- t = 90 ÷ 60 = 1.5.
1.5 h, i.e. 1 h 30.

How to read the result
80 km/h average on a motorway often means 110 while cruising plus slowdowns. Use it to plan an arrival, not to argue a ticket. For running, invert: min/km = 60 / (km/h).
Common mistakes
Typing 1:30 in the time field.
Enter 1.5. The field is not a clock.
Mixing km and mph.
One pair: km with km/h, or mi with mph.
Dividing by a time of 0.
Without a duration, speed is undefined.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate average speed?
Distance divided by time.
v = d / t. With d in km and t in hours, v is in km/h. Convert 90 minutes to 1.5 h before dividing.
How do I convert 1 h 20 into hours?
1 + 20/60 = 1.333 h.
Minutes divide by 60. 1 h 15 = 1.25; 45 min = 0.75. Do not write 1.20 for 1 h 20.
Can I use miles?
Yes, if everything is in miles.
Distance in miles and speed in mph. The engine applies v = d / t to the numbers you type.
