Calculate running pace from distance and time

Pace is total time divided by distance. Average speed is the inverse. No calories are estimated: ACSM METs are not applied here.

Distance run (or to run), in kilometers. Elevation is not in the math. A half marathon is 21.1 km; a marathon 42.2 km. Convert miles first if needed (1 mi = 1.609344 km).

Whole hours. Leave 0 for a 10 km under an hour.

0 to 59. Total time (h+min+s) must be strictly positive.

0 to 59. Useful for a 5 km chip time, not for a time rounded to the minute.

How the calculator works

You enter a distance in kilometers and a time (hours, minutes, seconds). The tool converts time to seconds, refuses a zero total, then computes seconds per kilometer and km/h. That is stopwatch arithmetic, not a physiologic model. The American College of Sports Medicine describes METs for exercise intensity; we cite that source precisely to say we do not use it on this page. A 10 km in 50 min with 100 m of climb is not the same energy cost as flat: the displayed pace will still match. For daily calories, Mifflin × activity stays on TDEE / calories, with no mechanical link to this pace. US road races often quote min/mile: 5:00/km is about 8:03 per mile; convert distance to km first.

Formula and method

temps_total (s) = 3600 × h + 60 × min + s

Hours, minutes (0–59), and seconds (0–59).

allure (s/km) = temps_total / distance(km)

Displayed as min:ss per kilometer.

vitesse (km/h) = distance / (temps_total / 3600)

Average over the typed course, not VO₂max pace.

Many running calculators chain pace and calories via a MET or VO₂. That stacks assumptions (weight, efficiency, flat, wind). HexaCalc splits: here, the clock; elsewhere, Mifflin. The ACSM citation documents the MET frame we refuse to apply on this page, so a pace cannot masquerade as expenditure. Elevation, surface, drafting, and aid stations are outside the formula.

Worked example

10 km in 50 minutes

10 km, 0 h, 50 min, 0 s.

  1. Time = 50 × 60 = 3,000 s.
  2. Pace = 3,000 / 10 = 300 s/km = 5:00 / km.
  3. Speed = 10 / (3,000/3600) = 12 km/h.

5:00 / km, which is 12 km/h. No kcal is inferred. About 8:03 per mile if you convert.

5 km in 27 min 30 s

5 km, 0 h, 27 min, 30 s.

  1. Time = 27 × 60 + 30 = 1,650 s.
  2. Pace = 1,650 / 5 = 330 s/km = 5:30 / km.
  3. Speed = 5 / (1,650/3600) ≈ 10.91 km/h.

5:30 / km, about 10.91 km/h.

Input notes

Distance
A half at 21.1 km, a marathon at 42.2 km: type the real distance, not “13.1” miles without converting, and not “21” if you want half-marathon pace.
Hours
For a 3:30 marathon, put 3 hours and 30 minutes, not 210 in the minutes field (capped at 59).
Minutes
Required in the sense that the clock must exist. With hours = 0 and seconds = 0, minutes alone make the time.
Seconds
They change 5 km pace; they barely change a 42.2 km typed to the minute.

Assumptions and limits

Assumptions

  • Horizontal distance equivalent to the clock (GPS and official course can differ).
  • Running time, not time with long unsubtracted stops — you type what you want to average.
  • No elevation model.

Limits

  • No calories, no METs, no VO₂.
  • No VO₂max, no heart-rate zones.
  • A GPS that overstates distance understates pace.
  • Does not judge whether the pace is “too fast” for health.

How to read the result

5:00 / km describes only the average rhythm of the typed time. It does not say you should run that tomorrow, or what it “costs” in kcal. If you then open TDEE, you change quantity: a full day estimated by Mifflin, not a jog.

Common mistakes

  • Putting 90 in minutes for 1 h 30.

    Minutes max 59. Use 1 hour and 30 minutes.

  • Expecting a session calorie total.

    This page deliberately refuses METs. Daily calories are another calculator, another formula.

  • Comparing a trail pace (elevation) to a road pace as if the model compensated.

    It does not. Pace remains time/distance.

Why cite ACSM if you do not use METs?

To make explicit that pace is not converted into energy expenditure on this page.

Without that border, a reader might think a pace “implies” kcal. ACSM provides the MET frame we do not plug in. Better a source for a non-use than an invented MET.

Pace versus speed?

Pace is time per kilometer; speed is distance per hour. One is the inverse of the other.

Runners mostly talk min/km (or min/mile). 5:00 / km = 12 km/h. Both display to avoid a mental conversion. Min/mile is not computed here; convert km or multiply pace by 1.609344.

Can I use this for a half or a marathon?

Yes: type 21.1 or 42.2 km and the race time. Pace will be an average over the whole distance.

The average hides a positive split. The tool does not split relays. Trail elevation is still not modeled.

Do wind and elevation count?

Not in the math. Only the clock and the typed distance.

Two 10 km in 50 min have the same pace here, whether the road is flat or not. That is the accepted limit of a time/distance ratio.
