Convert volumes, keeping US and UK gallons apart

The liter is 1 dm³, or 0.001 m³ exactly. The US gallon and the UK imperial gallon are not the same capacity: the tool separates them, with no ambiguous “gallon” option.

Calculate

Volume to convert. Choose US gallon or UK gallon clearly.

Starting unit. Default: US gallon, to keep it distinct from the UK gallon.

Target unit. Default: liter.

How the calculator works

Each unit has a factor to the cubic meter. The milliliter is 10⁻⁶ m³, the liter 10⁻³ m³. Cubic inch and cubic foot are cubes of the international lengths. The US liquid gallon is 3.785411784 L (231 in³). The UK (imperial) gallon is 4.54609 L. A “gal” without qualifier on a US notice is almost always the US gallon; an old British recipe may still mean the imperial gallon.

Formula and method

V(m³) = x × kfrom ; y = V(m³) / kto

k: factor to the cubic meter.

1 L = 0,001 m³ = 1 000 ml

SI / liter identities.

1 gal US = 3,785411784 L ; 1 gal UK = 4,54609 L

Two definitions, two options. About a 20% gap.

The cubic meter is the SI unit of volume. The liter is accepted for use with SI. Gallon factors are NIST’s (US liquid gallon) and the imperial gallon definition in liters. There is no “average” gallon. A US petroleum gallon (barrel, etc.) is not treated separately: it is the same US liquid gallon. Concrete is ordered in m³ (or yd³): convert first, then use the concrete tool for L × W × T.

Worked example

1 US gallon to liters

x = 1, from gal US to L.

  1. 1 × 3.785411784 = 3.785411784 L.

3.785411784 L.

1 UK gallon to liters

x = 1, from gal UK to L.

  1. 1 × 4.54609 = 4.54609 L.

4.54609 L — about 0.76 L more than the US gallon.

Assumptions and limits

Assumptions

  • US gallon = US liquid gallon (231 in³), not the US dry gallon.
  • UK gallon = imperial gallon (4.54609 L).
  • 1 L = 0.001 m³ exactly.

Limits

  • No pint, barrel, tablespoon, or fluid ounce as a single option.
  • The US dry gallon (agriculture) is not listed.
  • An irregular tank must be measured first; this tool only changes unit.

How to read the result

A “5 gallon” US jerry can is 18.93 L; in UK gallons, 5 gal ≈ 22.73 L. The gap pays for an order error. For 2 m³ of concrete, stay in m³: 2,000 L is not 2,000 gallons. Then connect length, width, and thickness in the concrete calculator.

Common mistakes

  • Choosing gal US for a British notice in imperial gallons.

    Gal UK = 4.54609 L. Gal US = 3.785411784 L. The gap is about 20%.

  • Confusing liter and m³ by a factor of 10 instead of 1,000.

    1 m³ = 1,000 L, not 100 L. 1 L = 0.001 m³.

  • Converting an area (m²) here.

Volume has a thickness. Area has its own converter.

Frequently asked questions

Why two gallons?

Because the United States and the United Kingdom did not keep the same definition.

The US liquid gallon is 231 cubic inches. The imperial gallon was later fixed against the liter (4.54609 L). Showing a single “gallon” would be about a 20% error. NIST texts separate the two clearly; this converter does too.

Is 1 ml equal to 1 cm³?

Yes, for this use: 1 ml = 1 cm³ = 10⁻⁶ m³.

The milliliter is 10⁻³ L. The cubic centimeter is not in the list, but 1 ml = 1 cm³. 250 ml = 250 cm³ = 0.00025 m³.

How do I order concrete from gallons?

Convert to m³, then use L × W × T in the concrete tool if you start from dimensions.

Trucks speak m³ (or yd³). A volume already known in ft³ or US gallons converts here to m³. If you have slab dimensions, the concrete tool is more direct: it adds a waste margin, which a plain conversion does not.

Is the liter part of SI?

It is a unit accepted for use with SI, equal to 1 dm³.

BIPM admits the liter for everyday volumes. Conversion to m³ is exact (× 0.001). No “old liter” in this tool.

Slab or tank in m³

If the volume comes from length × width × thickness, the concrete calculator also applies a jobsite waste margin.
