Calculate a weighted GPA with honors and AP

The calculation starts from the ordinary GPA, then adds a bonus by course type: nothing for a regular course, half a point for honors, a full point for AP. The bonus is added to the letter's points before weighting by credits. One important exception: an F earns no bonus, because failing an AP class is still a zero.

points = points(letter) + bonus(type)

weighted GPA = Σ(points × credits) ÷ Σ(credits)

F → 0 points, no bonus

Bonuses of 0.5 and 1.0 are the most common convention in US high schools, but they are not universal: some schools give +1 for honors, some weight only AP courses, some cap the weighted GPA at 5.0. Universities frequently recompute an unweighted GPA anyway, to compare applicants on a common basis.

Courses

Format letter;credits;type. Type is regular, honors or ap. With no type given, the course is treated as regular.

Assumptions

• A bonus of +0.5 for honors and +1.0 for AP.
• No bonus is applied to an F.
• The weighted GPA is not capped at 5.0.

Limits

• Bonus scales differ between schools.
• No distinction between AP, IB and dual enrolment.
• The unweighted GPA is often the one admissions look at.

A weighted GPA of 4.3 means you took demanding courses and did well in them, not that you exceeded perfection. Always compare weighted GPAs with each other, never a weighted one against an unweighted one: the gap comes from the scale, not the student. That is why the tool shows both.
