Math Calculator With Steps
Type an expression with numbers, + − × ÷, exponents (^), parentheses, square roots and percentages. The calculator solves it one operation at a time in PEMDAS order and shows the work, so you can check homework or learn the rules.
- Answer
- 23
Steps
- 3 + 4 × (2 - 7)^2 ÷ 5
- = 3 + 4 × (-5)^2 ÷ 5
- = 3 + 4 × 25 ÷ 5
- = 3 + 100 ÷ 5
- = 3 + 20
- = 23
Worked example
Example: 3 + 4 × (2 − 7)^2 ÷ 5
- Parentheses: 2 − 7 = −5
- Exponent: (−5)^2 = 25
- Multiply/divide left to right: 4 × 25 = 100, 100 ÷ 5 = 20
- Add: 3 + 20 = 23
23
Formula
P → E → M/D (left to right) → A/S (left to right)
Multiplication and division have equal priority and are done left to right; so are addition and subtraction. That's why 8 ÷ 2 × 4 = 16, not 1.
Frequently asked questions
What does PEMDAS stand for?
Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication and Division, Addition and Subtraction. Outside the US it's often BODMAS or BIDMAS.
Can I use implicit multiplication like 2(3 + 4)?
Yes. 2(3 + 4) is read as 2 × (3 + 4) = 14.
What symbols can I use?
Digits, decimals, + − * × / ÷ ^, parentheses, sqrt( ), % and ! (factorial).
