How Do You Calculate GPA?
Calculating GPA takes four steps: (1) convert each letter grade to grade points, (2) multiply by the class's credits, (3) add the results, and (4) divide by the total credits. Try it with the calculator below, which shows the same numbers.
- GPA (4.0 scale)
- 3.60
- Credits · quality points
- 5 · 18.00
Worked example
Example: a college semester
- Biology (4 credits) B+ → 3.3 × 4 = 13.2
- Calculus (3 credits) A → 4.0 × 3 = 12.0
- English (3 credits) B → 3.0 × 3 = 9.0
- Psychology (3 credits) A− → 3.7 × 3 = 11.1
- Total = 45.3 quality points ÷ 13 credits = 3.48
Semester GPA: 3.48.
Formula
GPA = Total quality points ÷ Total credits
Quality points = grade points × credits
Pass/fail and withdrawn classes are usually excluded. Repeated classes depend on your school's policy.
