- Sale price
- $60.00
- You save
- $20.00
Steps
- $80.00 × 25% = $20.00 off
- $80.00 − $20.00 = $60.00
Find the percent off from two prices
- Percent off
- 25%
- Amount saved
- $30.00
Steps
- ($120.00 − $90.00) ÷ $120.00 × 100 = 25%
Worked example
Example: a $80 jacket at 25% off
- Savings = $80 × 25% = $80 × 0.25 = $20
- Sale price = $80 − $20 = $60
- Shortcut: $80 × (1 − 0.25) = $60
You pay $60 and save $20.
Formula
Sale price = Price × (1 − Percent off ÷ 100)
Percent off = (Original − Sale) ÷ Original × 100
Stacked discounts multiply, they don't add: 20% off and then an extra 10% off is 1 − 0.8 × 0.9 = 28% off, not 30%.
Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate a percentage off?
Multiply the price by the percentage as a decimal to get the savings, then subtract it from the price. 30% off $45 is $45 × 0.30 = $13.50 off, so you pay $31.50.
How do I find the discount percentage from two prices?
Subtract the sale price from the original price, divide by the original price and multiply by 100. $120 marked down to $90 is (120 − 90) ÷ 120 × 100 = 25% off.
Is sales tax applied before or after the discount?
In the US, sales tax is charged on the discounted price, so take the discount first and then add tax.
How do I calculate 40% off quickly in my head?
Find 10% by moving the decimal one place left, multiply by 4, and subtract. For $65: 10% is $6.50, 40% is $26, so the price is $39.
