Convert power (watt, kilowatt, horsepower)

Every power routes through the watt. Metric horsepower is 735.49875 W and mechanical horsepower 745.7 W: two different units sharing one everyday name.

Calculate

Power to convert.

Starting unit. Default: metric horsepower.

Target unit. Default: kilowatt.

How the calculator works

The value is converted into watts, then into the target unit. The split between metric and mechanical horsepower is why the same car is quoted at 150 ch in Europe and about 148 hp in an American brochure. French fiscal horsepower is not a physical power and therefore does not appear here.

Formula and method

P(W) = x × kfrom ; y = P(W) / kto

k is the unit's factor to the watt.

1 metric hp = 735.49875 W

Metric horsepower, defined from the kilogram-force.

1 mechanical hp = 745.6999 W

Imperial mechanical horsepower.

The watt is the SI unit of power, one joule per second. Metric horsepower comes from a historical definition: raising 75 kilograms-force by one metre in one second. Mechanical horsepower is based on the foot-pound. Both survive, which is why they are listed separately.

Worked example

100 metric horsepower in kilowatts

x = 100, from hp to kW.

  1. 100 × 735.49875 = 73,549.875 W.
  2. That is 73.55 kW.

≈ 73.5 kW, about a small hatchback.

1 kW in horsepower

x = 1, from kW to hp.

  1. 1,000 / 735.49875 ≈ 1.3596.

≈ 1.36 metric hp.

Assumptions and limits

Assumptions

  • “ch” means metric horsepower (735.49875 W).
  • “hp” means mechanical horsepower (≈ 745.7 W).
  • Mechanical and electrical power are treated alike: the watt is common to both.

Limits

  • French fiscal horsepower is not a physical power.
  • No distinction between rated, peak and continuous power.
  • Motor efficiency is not modelled: input power exceeds useful output.

How to read the result

A 150 hp car produces about 110 kW. A registration document lists that power in kilowatts alongside a fiscal rating computed by an administrative formula with no direct relation. For a household appliance, watts and kilowatts are enough: horsepower has no place there.

Common mistakes

  • Mixing metric and mechanical horsepower.

The gap is about 1.4%: 150 metric hp is roughly 148 mechanical hp.

  • Confusing fiscal horsepower with real power.

Fiscal horsepower serves a tax calculation, not a description of the engine.

  • Treating power as consumption.

A power in watts becomes energy only once multiplied by a duration.

Frequently asked questions

How many kW is 150 horsepower?

About 110 kW.

150 × 735.49875 = 110,324 W, so roughly 110.3 kW in metric horsepower. Using mechanical horsepower would give about 111.9 kW.

Metric or mechanical horsepower?

Metric in Europe.

European spec sheets use metric horsepower of 735.49875 W. American and British documents use mechanical horsepower of about 745.7 W.

Is fiscal horsepower part of this?

No.

Fiscal horsepower comes from an administrative formula combining power and emissions. It does not convert into watts and is not offered here.
