Every pressure routes through the pascal, the SI unit equal to one newton per square metre. The bar is exactly 100,000 Pa and the standard atmosphere 101,325 Pa.

How the calculator works

The value is multiplied by its factor to the pascal, then divided by the target unit's factor. The psi (pound-force per square inch) comes from the imperial system; the conventional millimetre of mercury is 133.322387415 Pa. A tyre pressure shown in bar therefore reads in psi without going through an approximate table.

The pascal is the SI unit of pressure. The bar is not an SI unit but remains accepted, notably in meteorology as the hectopascal. The psi dominates in the English-speaking world, including for tyres. Whether the figures are gauge or absolute depends on your source: this tool does not distinguish between them.

Worked example

A 2.4 bar tyre pressure in psi

x = 2.4, from bar to psi.

  1. 2.4 × 100,000 = 240,000 Pa.
  2. 240,000 / 6,894.757 ≈ 34.81 psi.

≈ 34.8 psi.

One atmosphere in hectopascals

x = 1, from atm to kPa.

  1. 1 atm = 101,325 Pa = 101.325 kPa.

101.325 kPa, that is 1,013.25 hPa.

  • Tyre pressure is specified cold: the conversion does not correct for heating.

How to read the result

2.4 bar and 34.8 psi describe the same pressure. Watch what kind of measurement it is: a tyre gauge reads gauge pressure, above the surrounding atmosphere, while an absolute pressure includes that atmosphere. A gap of about 1 bar between two sources usually comes from that, not from a conversion error.

Common mistakes

  • Taking 1 bar as 1 atmosphere.

    1 bar = 100,000 Pa, 1 atm = 101,325 Pa, a 1.3% difference.

  • Confusing psi with psig.

    psig is explicitly gauge pressure; plain psi may mean absolute depending on context.

  • Inflating a tyre to the value read when hot.

    The recommended pressure is checked cold; warm air raises the reading.

How many psi in 1 bar?

About 14.5 psi.

1 bar = 100,000 Pa and 1 psi ≈ 6,894.757 Pa, so 1 bar ≈ 14.5038 psi. For a tyre, 2 bar is therefore roughly 29 psi.

Why does the weather use hectopascals?

1 hPa = 1 millibar.

The hectopascal replaced the millibar without changing any numbers: 1,013 hPa equals 1,013 mbar, which spared meteorologists from redrawing every chart.

Is mmHg still used?

Yes, in medicine.

Blood pressure is still expressed in millimetres of mercury. The conventional value of 133.322387415 Pa allows conversion to SI units.
