Every energy routes through the joule. A kilowatt-hour is exactly 3.6 million joules, and a food kilocalorie 4,184 joules.

How the calculator works

The value is converted into joules, then into the target unit. A kilowatt-hour is not a power: it is one kilowatt sustained for one hour, so 1,000 W × 3,600 s. The calorie used here is the thermochemical calorie; the “Calorie” with a capital C on food labels is in fact a kilocalorie.

The joule is the SI unit of energy, work and quantity of heat. The kilowatt-hour is used to bill electricity. The BTU is still common in English-speaking heating and air conditioning. European food labels print kJ and kcal side by side precisely because both units coexist.

Worked example

A 2 kW hob for 30 minutes

Energy = 2 kW × 0.5 h = 1 kWh, converted to kJ.

  1. 1 kWh = 3,600,000 J.
  2. That is 3,600 kJ.

3,600 kJ, or 3.6 MJ.

A 250 kcal serving in kilojoules

x = 250, from kcal to kJ.

  1. 250 × 4,184 = 1,046,000 J.
  2. That is 1,046 kJ.

Assumptions and limits

Assumptions

  • 1 kWh = 3.6 × 10⁶ J exactly.
  • 1 cal = 4.184 J (thermochemical calorie).
  • 1 BTU ≈ 1,055.06 J (international BTU).

Limits

  • Energy is not power: a “2,000 W” appliance does not consume 2,000 Wh.
  • Conversion efficiency is not modelled: burning 1 kWh of gas does not deliver 1 kWh of useful heat.
  • The metabolisable energy of food differs from its heat of combustion.

How to read the result

An electricity bill counts kilowatt-hours, so it counts energy. Multiplying an appliance's power by how long it runs gives that energy. On the nutrition side, 2,000 kcal a day is about 8,368 kJ: the two figures describe the same intake.

Common mistakes

  • Confusing kW with kWh.

    The kW is instantaneous power; the kWh is energy accumulated over time.

  • Reading “250 calories” on a package as 250 cal.

    It means 250 kcal, that is 250,000 calories in the physical sense.

  • Adding gas and electricity kWh as if they cost the same.

    The energy content is comparable; the price and the efficiency are not.

How many joules in a kWh?

3.6 million.

A kilowatt-hour is 1,000 watts for 3,600 seconds, so 3,600,000 joules, that is 3.6 megajoules.

Calorie or kilocalorie on a label?

Almost always kilocalories.

A “Calorie” with a capital C, common in the United States, means a kilocalorie. In Europe, labels show both kJ and kcal, which removes the ambiguity.

Does a 2,000 W heater use 2 kWh?

Only if it runs for an hour.

2,000 W for one hour is 2 kWh. For fifteen minutes it is only 0.5 kWh. Power has to be multiplied by the running time.
