Lavender, lilac or periwinkle?
These three light purples are often used interchangeably, but they lean in different directions:
- Lavender is a soft, slightly gray purple, named after the flower.
- Lilac is pinker and warmer.
- Periwinkle leans blue, almost halfway to cornflower.
In CSS, lavender (#E6E6FA) is so pale it looks almost white, while thistle and plum are closer to what most people call lilac.
Using light purple well
Light purples are popular for beauty, wellness and children's products, and they work well as calm backgrounds in apps. They pair with:
- sage or mint green for a soft, natural feel,
- butter yellow, their complementary partner, for brightness,
- charcoal or deep plum for contrast and readable text.
Contrast
Lavenders and lilacs need dark text. The brighter light purples in the middle group can take white text only at large sizes; check the "Aa" figure on each swatch.
Season and mood
In seasonal color analysis, soft lavenders belong to Light Summer and True Summer palettes. Explore shades of purple for deeper versions, mauve for dusty tones, and the Light Summer palette for a full cool, light wardrobe set.
