What makes a green "sage"
Sage greens sit at low saturation and medium-to-light lightness, with a slight gray cast. In OKLCH terms most of them have a chroma below about 0.07, which is why they read as calm rather than grassy. Some lean yellow, toward olive; others lean blue, toward eucalyptus.
Sage at home
Sage has been one of the most popular paint and décor colors of the 2020s. It works because it behaves almost like a neutral:
- Walls: pale and gray-green sages make rooms feel light without the starkness of white.
- Kitchens: deeper sage cabinets pair well with brass handles and warm wood.
- Pairings: cream, terracotta, warm white, natural oak and dusty pink.
Paint looks different from screens, so treat these codes as a starting point and test a physical sample in your own light.
Weddings and branding
Sage and blush pink is a long-running wedding combination; add ivory and a deep green for contrast. For brands, sage signals natural, calm and considered, common in skincare, food and wellness.
Text on sage
Most sage shades are mid-light, so dark text reads better than white. Check the "Aa" ratio on each swatch. For more muted naturals, see greige and the neutral colors page; for all greens, see shades of green.
