A battlefield name
Magenta was named after the Battle of Magenta in Italy in 1859, the year a new synthetic dye in this color appeared. On screens, magenta and fuchsia are the same CSS color, #FF00FF: full red and blue, no green.
Magenta, fuchsia and hot pink
- Magenta in print (the M in CMYK) is pinker than screen magenta.
- Fuchsia is often used for a slightly pinker magenta.
- Hot pink is lighter and less purple.
Styling magenta
Magenta is bold and energetic. It pairs well with black, white, navy, lime and teal. Use it as an accent rather than a background.
On screen
Screen magenta passes AA with black text but not with white at normal size, so check pairs in the contrast checker. For neighbors, see shades of pink, neon colors and bright colors.
