A uniform color

Navy blue takes its name from the dark blue uniforms adopted by the British Royal Navy in 1748. The CSS keyword navy is #000080: no red, no green, and blue at half strength.

  • Navy is a deep, slightly bright blue.
  • Midnight blue (#191970 in CSS) is darker and a little more purple.
  • Indigo leans clearly toward violet.

Styling navy

Navy works as a softer replacement for black. It looks sharp with white, cream, camel, gold and coral, and it is one of the safest colors for suits, logos and backgrounds.

On screen

Navy has very high contrast with white text, well above the WCAG AAA threshold. Avoid putting dark gray text on navy. If you want a lighter tint for hover states, generate one in the shades generator, and compare it with other shades of blue and dark colors.
